Philmont Ranch Website

Important Information

Philmont participants will backpack 50-75 miles in the red rock mountains of New Mexico while enjoying a broad variety of activities along the way. Most crews will do at least 6 of the following: horseback riding, blacksmithing, gold mine, rock climbing, fly fishing, spar pole climbing, muzzle loading rifles, 30.06 rifles, shotguns, burro packing, burro racing, mountain climbs (up to 12,300 feet!), challenge courses and musical programs. In addition there are massive campfires in base camp both nights you are there as well as outdoor church services.

  • Troop was awarded a slot for a crew of up to 12 youth and adults combined for 2023

  • Minimum Age 13 and having completed the 8th grade, or 14 by the time of arrival (June 2023)

  • Must be First Class Rank by June 1, 2023

  • The minimum crew size is 8, max 12. The majority have to be youth, and there must be at least 2 adults. As of 12/1/21 12 people have expressed preliminary interest but no deposits have been collected.

  • Participation in shakedown activities is MANDATORY but there will be some flexibility in the shakedown schedule.

  • All participants have to be registered with the BSA at the time of the trip.

  • A deposit of $150 per person is necessary to reserve your spot. First come, first served. Checks will be accepted by Mr. Bell or Mr. Smith starting Thursday December 16, 2021. A waiting list will be created if necessary.

  • The deposit will be refundable until January 20, 2022. Non-refundable thereafter.

  • The next payment, of $800, will be due September 1, 2022.

  • Total cost for the adventure, including the deposit, will be about $2400. This estimate is based on Troop 50 adults managing the trip in the most economical way possible. This is a very good value in terms of dollars-per-day cost of active adventure. Most other high adventure trips have 5-6 days of activities versus 10 for Philmont.

  • Trip duration: about 14 days consisting of 2 nights touring prior to Philmont, 2 nights in base camp, and 10 nights on the trail. The pre-Philmont touring is necessary for altitude adjustment.

Anticipated Schedule

  • Fly to Colorado from Philadelphia around Sunday June 25, 2023

  • Drive from Colorado to New Mexico on Tuesday June 27, 2023

  • Return to Philadelphia on Sunday July 9, 2023
